Youth Board Sleep-Out to Bring Awareness to Children's Mental Health and Celebrate World Mental Health Day

Saturday, October 6, 2007

The Minnesota Statewide Family Network (MSFN) Youth Board is a group of youth age 13-18 who are working to educate the public on what a child with mental health issues experiences in school and the community. This event will increase public awareness that one in four children deal with a mental health issue. The sleep-out is planned as a local kick-off for the World Mental Health Day Celebration on October 10, 2007.

The Sleep-Out

Youth Board participants will give up their warm beds on the evening of October 6th and camp out in the parking lot area at PACER Center, Champions for Children with Disabilities, 8161 Normandale Blvd., Minneapolis, MN. Many activities are scheduled and special guests will be invited.

Fundraising

If spending a chilly night outside isn't enough, the Youth Board is planning on contacting Community Sponsors to help support this event and to raise funds to help educate the public about the mental health needs of teens.

Event Proceeds

The event proceeds will go to the Minnesota Statewide Family Network (MSFN) which is a non-profit parent-directed organization, whose mission is to expand opportunities and enhance the lives of children with mental health disorders through individual advocacy, educational workshops, and connecting parents to resources. MSFN and the Youth Board will help to increase awareness and decrease the stigma associated with a mental health need.

New curriculum on children's mental services.

The Minnesota Statewide Family Network is a statewide nonprofit parent-directed organization in Minnesota, whose mission is to expand opportunities and enhance the lives of children with mental health disorders and their families.

Recognizing that families need information and training to obtain appropriate mental health and school services for their children, MSFN has developed a way of connecting parents with other parents and resources for information exchange. In addition, MSFN provides individual advocacy, workshops, written materials and referrals.

Recognizing also that families can become powerful advocates for appropriate services for all children with mental health disorders, MSFN is offering parent leadership and management skills training. Parents really do make the difference!

Thank you for visiting us, and we look forward to hearing from you.
